Detainee Ahmed Manasra Freed After 10 Years in Israeli Prisons
The Palestinian detainee was arrested when he was only 13-years-old, and face brutal treatment by the Israeli prison authorities throughout the 10 years he spent in Israeli imprisonment.
Israeli authorities released 23-year-old Ahmad Manasra from Nafha Prison in the Negev Desert on Thursday, ending 10 years of imprisonment.
Israeli authorities deliberately released Ahmad Manasra away from the main gate of Nafha Prison, where his family had been waiting to welcome him, and after his release, he encountered a resident of Be’er Sheva and used their phone to call his family and let them know he had been free, as per Al Mayadeen's correspondent.
Ahmad Manasra’s lawyer told Al Mayadeen that his client was released in a highly fragile mental state, having endured torture and solitary confinement from 2021 up until the start of the current war, and that he was subjected to the same harsh treatment and punitive measures imposed on other prisoners during the conflict.
Israeli Intelligence warned Manasra's family from celebrating his return, the lawyer added.
Ahmad Manasra was arrested in 2015 at the age of 13 after he and his cousin were accused of carrying out a resistance operation in occupied Jerusalem, during which his cousin Hassan Manasra was shot and killed by Israeli forces and Ahmad was seriously wounded.
On the day of his arrest, Ahmad Manasra was severely beaten, resulting in a fractured skull and internal bleeding in his head, and he was subjected to harsh physical and psychological interrogations that included sleep deprivation, long hours of continuous questioning, isolation from other prisoners, and denial of visits and necessary medical treatment.
After several sessions, the Israeli occupation court issued a verdict of 12 years in prison against Ahmad and compensation of 180,000 shekels. The sentence was reduced to nine and a half years in 2017.
Before his transfer to prison, the Israeli occupation authorities held Ahmad for two years in a special institution for juveniles under difficult and harsh conditions, and later transferred him to "Megiddo" Prison when he was 14 years old.
In September of 2023, the Israeli court in "Ramla" prison delayed a trial to rule on ending Manasra's solitary confinement, which started in October 2021, despite his deteriorating health and psychological condition.
Mansara's solitary confinement sentence was extended several times in complete disregard of his mental and physical health, such as in August of 2022.
Over the past several years, a global campaign was launched calling for Ahmad Manasraメs release due to his deteriorating mental health caused by the trauma he experienced as a child in detention, accompanied by a series of hearings in Israeli courts that consistently rejected appeals for his release and refused to ease the restrictions imposed on him.
In August of 2022, Amnesty International called for the immediate release of Mansara after he developed serious mental health issues since his arrest at just 13 years old, due to the brutal treatment perpetrated by Israeli prison authorities.

Gaza Health Ministry: Israeli attacks left 186 martyrs and wounded in 24 hours
The Ministry of Health in Gaza announced on Thursday that hospitals in the Gaza Strip received 40 martyrs and 146 wounded during the past 24 hours.
Israeli occupation forces (IOF) committed a horrific massacre by bombing a densely populated residential square in Baghdad Street in the Al-Shujaiya neighborhood, east of Gaza City, on Wednesday morning, which resulted in the complete destruction of about ten houses on top of its residents, leading to the martyrdom of 40 civilians and the injury of more than 50 people.
In a statement, the ministry said that the number of victims of the ongoing genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, has risen to 50,886 martyrs and 115,875 wounded.
The number of martyrs and injuries since the occupation army resumed its genocidal war on Gaza on March 18 has risen to 1,522 martyrs and 3,834 wounded, according to the statement.
It indicated that a number of victims are still under the rubble and in the roads, as ambulance and civil defense crews cannot reach them.

Israeli army continues to launch deadly attacks on Gaza
The Israeli occupation army continued last night and on Thursday to carry out deadly attacks on different areas of the Gaza Strip, killing and injuring dozens of civilians.
According to local media sources, Israeli forces also continued today to detonate more homes and displace families in the Gaza Strip, further exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation under a stifling blockade that risks plunging the population into severe famine.
A reporter for the Palestinian Information Center said that two children were martyred in an Israeli drone attack in ash-Shuja’iya neighborhood, east of Gaza City.
Paramedics also evacuated a martyr after he came under Israeli gunfire in al-Mawasi area of Rafah, south of Gaza.
Two Israeli strikes claimed the lives of multiple citizens near the Public Service Hospital and as-Samer junction in Gaza City.
The Israeli army also launched attacks on other areas of the Gaza Strip, killing and wounding more civilians, including children and women.

Gaza: Dozens released from Israeli jails
The Israeli occupation army released some 80 Palestinian detainees into the war-battered Gaza Strip on Thursday morning, local sources said.
The detainees, who had been kidnapped during the genocidal war on Gaza, were set free at the Israeli-controlled Kissufim border crossing in eastern Khan Yunis, south of Gaza, the Anadolu news agency quoted local sources as saying.
According to Anadolu, at least 10 of the freed prisoners are in poor health condition and were hospitalized at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central city of Deir al-Balah.
“One of the freed detainees is in a very critical condition and unable to move, with his body bearing clear signs of torture,” a medical source told Anadolu.
Anadolu said there was no immediate comment from Israel or the Hamas Movement on the releases.
Hundreds of Gazan prisoners were previously released from Israeli detention centers and jails under the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement last January between the Palestinian resistance and the Israeli occupation government.
“There are no exact figures about the number of Gazans held by Israel, but estimates suggest that their numbers are in the thousands,” Anadolu said.

Dozens of settlers defile Aqsa Mosque
Scores of extremist Jewish settlers desecrated the Aqsa Mosque in Occupied Jerusalem on Thursday morning, amid tight restrictions on the entry of Muslim worshipers to the holy site.
According to local sources, dozens of settlers entered the Mosque through its Maghariba Gate and provocatively toured its courtyards under police protection.
During their tours at the Islamic holy site, the settlers received lectures from rabbis about the alleged temple mount and a number of them provocatively performed Talmudic prayers.
Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation police imposed movement and entry restrictions on Muslim worshipers at the Aqsa Mosque’s entrances and gates and prevented many of them from entering the holy site.
In a related context, Palestinian religious and national figures and institutions have called on Palestinian citizens to intensify their presence at the Aqsa Mosque during the coming days to protect it against mass desecration by settlers, especially during the upcoming Jewish Passover holiday.

Sudan tells ICJ UAE driving force behind genocide in Darfur
Sudan has accused the UAE at the International Court of Justice of fueling genocide in Darfur by arming the paramilitary RSF.
Sudan told the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Thursday that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was the "driving force" behind what it called a genocide in Darfur via its support for rebels fighting the Sudanese army.
Sudan accused the UAE of providing weapons to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been fighting a two-year civil war against the Sudanese army, and while the UAE denied these allegations, UN experts and US lawmakers considered the accusations credible.
Sudan has also accused the UAE of complicity in genocide against the Masalit community through their backing of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that have been battling the Sudanese army since 2023.
The UAE denies supporting the RSF and has dismissed Sudan's case as "political theatre" distracting from efforts to end the war that has killed tens of thousands.
Since the war began in April 2023, tens of thousands of people have been killed and 12 million displaced, resulting in what the United Nations has labeled the world’s largest displacement crisis.
In the case's opening statement, Sudan's acting Justice Minister, Muawia Osman, told the court that the "ongoing genocide would not be possible without the complicity of the UAE, including the shipment of arms to the RSF".
"The direct logistical and other support that the UAE has provided and continues to provide to the RSF has been and continues to be the primary driving force behind the genocide now taking place, including killing, rape, forced displacement and looting," said Osman.
Sudan wants ICJ judges to force the UAE to stop its support for the RSF and make "full reparations", including compensation to victims of the war. But Reem Ketait, a top UAE official, described Sudan's case as a "blatant misuse of a respected international institution" and "entirely without legal or factual merit". "What Sudan needs now is not political theatre, but an urgent immediate ceasefire and a serious commitment from both warring parties to negotiate a peaceful resolution," said Ketait in a statement.
The case comes a day after the United States and Saudi Arabia called on the Sudanese army and paramilitary forces to resume peace talks in the country's conflict. - 'Important questions' - Legal experts say Sudan's case may founder on jurisdictional issues.
UAE's reservation to the genocide convention
The UAE is a signatory to the 1948 Genocide Convention, as is Sudan. However, the UAE may not consider itself bound by Article IX of the Genocide Convention, which states that disputes between contracting parties, including those relating to the responsibility of a state for genocide, shall be submitted to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at the request of any of the parties to the dispute.
"Because the UAE made a reservation to Article IX when it acceded to the Genocide Convention in 2005, the ICJ can be expected to conclude that it lacks jurisdiction over the dispute," wrote Michael Becker, international law expert from Trinity College Dublin, in a recent piece for Opinio Juris specialist website.
In its case, Sudan argued that the UAE's reservation is "incompatible" with the purpose of the Genocide Convention, which emphasises global collective responsibility.
The rulings of the ICJ, which hears disputes between states, are final and binding but the court has no means to ensure compliance.

Scholar: Without strong response, Arabs risk falling under Israeli control
In the absence of a strong Arab response, the Levant region could fall completely under the dominance of the Israeli regime, an Arab scholar and head of a research institute warns.
This would alter the region's political landscape for generations to come, Azmi Bishara, director of the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS), warned in an interviewᅠwith Al Araby Television Network.
Levant refers to vast swathes of West Asia that includes Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria, where the regime has been leading either a drawn-out genocidal war or escalated deadly aggression.
The head of Qatar-based research institute cited Israel's actions in Syria and Lebanon as evidence of its expanding influence, suggesting that the United States and Israel might divide Syria and provoke civil unrest in neighboring Lebanon.
Bishara, who is an Arab-Israeli public intellectual, political philosopher and author, warned that in the case of the absence of decisive and firm Arab responses, Israel will become “the master of the region,” dictating terms to Arab countries - just as Tel Aviv is trying to do in Syria and Lebanon.
“And that’s not even to mention the Palestinians,” he added, stressing that the Tel Aviv regime does not recognize the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority or the existence of Palestinian territories.
Bishara emphasized that Arab nations enjoy a vested interest in establishing a joint security framework with Turkey and Iran to counter these developments.
“We have an Arab interest in avoiding war and in establishing a joint security system with Turkey and Iran that contains Israel and puts an end to the constant American blackmail under the guise of protection,” he said.
Bishara stressed the urgency of a coordinated Arab response to prevent further Israeli expansion and interference in the region and the importance of solidarity among Arab nations, Turkey, and Iran to safeguard regional sovereignty and ensure that the rights of Palestinians and other marginalized groups are protected.
Regarding the situation in the war-torn Gaza Strip, the head of ACRPS dismissed Israeli claims of facilitating the displacement of Palestinians, saying that such plans are unlikely to succeed as long as Egypt opposes them.
However, Bishara warned that if Arab actions remain unchanged, the chances of Israel implementing its plan to occupy Gaza and expel its residents will grow.
He said signs are emerging that US President Donald Trump is growing weary of the ongoing conflict for his own reasons.
Without a strong Arab stance, Israel might exploit the situation to reshape the region according to its interests, potentially sidelining Palestinian rights and aspirations, Bishara warned.
The Arab scholar, who is the author of “Syria: The Path of Suffering Toward Freedom”, also addressed the internal dynamics within Arab countries, criticizing their rivalry to align closely with the US, arguing that it undermines collective Arab interests and weakens their position in regional conflicts.
He also called for a unified Arab approach that prioritizes the establishment of inclusive, democratic states and resists external pressures that threaten regional stability.
Three civilians killed in Sana'a as US intensifies airstrikes on Yemen
At least three civilians have been killed in new US airstrikes on Yemen's capital, bringing to 107 the total number of people killed in such attacks across the country since mid-March.
The al-Masirah television, citing Yemen's health ministry, said the strikes hit the al-Sabeen district early Thursday.
The ministry said the death toll from the attack has not yet been finalized, but based on initial reports, "three civilians have been martyred and a number of others have been wounded".
Al-Masirah, in a separate report, said US warplanes bombed the Bani Hushaysh district northeast of Sana'a in four attacks.
The Yemeni network also reported a US airstrike on Kamaran Island west of Hudaydah in the Red Sea.
According to the ministry, US air raids have killed a total of 107 civilians, including women and children, and injured 223 others between March 15 and April 9.
The US signaled on Monday that it is planning to step up its violent campaign of airstrikes on Yemen.
“It’s been a bad three weeks for the Houthis, and it’s about to get worse,” Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said in the Oval Office, while seated near US President Donald Trump and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Anis al-Asbahi, the ministry's spokesperson, told the Saba news agency that the US crimes in Yemen would not have occurred without the silence and inaction of the international community.
US atrocities "reveal the brutality of this savage aggression, which does not hesitate to kill civilians, in a failed attempt to break the will of the Yemeni people" as they keep supporting the Palestinian cause, he added.
Asbahi called on the international community to expose and condemn US aggression against civilians, public facilities, and medical establishments.
Washington began bombing Yemen on March 15 after Sana’a resumed retaliatory attacks on Israel in retaliation for the regime’s resumption of its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.
Since then, there have been near-daily US airstrikes targeting Yemen’s civilian infrastructure.
Washington has portrayed its attacks as an attempt to restore freedom of navigation in the waters around Yemen.
However, Yemen has rejected the US allegation that it poses a threat to international shipping, saying it is solely targeting the ships that are Israeli-owned, flagged, operated or headed to ports in the occupied lands.
The Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF) began attacking Israeli-linked ships, as well as targets in the occupied territories in November 2023, a month after Israel launched its brutal onslaught against Gaza.
Despite intensified American airstrikes, Yemeni missile and drone operations have continued to target US warships in the Red Sea, and the country’s armed forces are still capable of shooting down US drones.
The deadly US war on Yemen – which has compounded an already severe humanitarian crisis – has cost nearly $1 billion, but has failed to significantly impact Ansarallah and the YAF, according to sources who spoke with CNN and the New York Times over the past few days.
On Wednesday, the Yemeni army said it carried out a military operation against an Israeli military target in Tel Aviv, using a Yaffa drone.
Yemeni forces also conducted a drone attack against the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in the north of the Red Sea.
Earlier Wednesday, the army said Yemeni forces shot down an American MQ-9 Reaper drone engaged in “hostile missions” in the country’s airspace.
The army said it will continue the retaliatory operations in support of the oppressed Palestinians until the Gaza war ends.
